1983 Chinese Cuisine Restaurant - Authentic Cantonese Dining & Dim Sum in Arlington, VA

Stumbled onto this place for an impromptu dinner. The interior is beautiful with the bar making a dramatic presence. We ordered spring rolls, orange chicken and dry pepper chicken. The spring rolls were the best we ever had, the orange chicken had such fresh orange flavor, and the pepper chicken was fantastic. Everything was served hot. They provide nice to go boxes and a super cute Quality thermal bag as well. We will be back.

The atmosphere is very nice. I was immediately greeted upon walking in. Once seated, it took a long time for someone to take my order, including for my drink. When taking my order, the man was very short with me and not friendly when I asked two questions about the menu. However, after that part, my experience was pleasant. I enjoyed the hot tea a lot; I would come here just for that. The General Tso chicken was basic and extra chewy to me; the sauce was decent. I loved the aesthetic of the restaurant.

We visited for a late lunch, and it was still crowded, reflecting its popularity as one of the best Cantonese restaurants in the DC metro area and northern Virginia. We sampled several dishes, and we highly recommend: - Red tea was served in a pot for sharing, and its quality was excellent, helping with digestion. - Shumai, the largest among dim sum in the DMV area, was very tasty. - Rice Noodle Roll with Shrimp was chewier than others and seasoned with vinegary soy sauce rather than sweet soy sauce, which tasted great. - Seafood with Vermicelli Pot was served hot, featuring a mix of seafood, red and green peppers, garlic, cooked in soy sauce with vermicelli. - Salted egg yolk Kabocha squash, deep-fried and garnished with salted egg yolk, offers a subtle salty flavor that enhances the squash's sweetness. - Their version of General Tso’s Chicken is sweeter than usual but still savory and flavorful. - Crispy Pork Intestine was unique and crispy, though its strong pork flavor might not appeal to everyone. It was very oily but tasted better with dipping sauce.

We had a great experience at this Chinese restaurant, enjoying their dim sum selection. The siu mai and har gaw were fresh and flavorful, with delicate wrappers and juicy fillings. The beef chow fun had an excellent wok hei, and the char siu bao was fluffy with a sweet-savory filling. The venue design itself was a bit dated but it was spotless and new. While the servers seemed a bit inexperienced their friendliness and effort made up for it. Overall, a satisfying meal with high-quality food in a clean, stylish setting. We plan to return to try their other non-dim sum dishes.

I came to the restaurant with a group of friends, and we were all blown away! It was one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Arlington! The food was incredible — every dish was full of authentic flavor, beautifully presented, and perfectly cooked. The atmosphere was modern yet cozy, making it a great spot for both group dinners and date nights. Check their bar area definitely, the display, the signature cocktails, definitely a high-end Chinese restaurant. Also the service was as impressive as the food. Their server and the manager were so attentive and friendly — they took time to explain dishes and even recommended a special item that was off-menu. It turned out to be one of the highlights of the night! (that spicy fried fish and spicy boil beef) We ended our meal with their pineapple bun dessert, which was hands down the best I’ve ever had. You can tell how much care and pride goes into everything they serve. Highly recommend this spot to anyone who looking for amazing Cantonese food in Arlington! Can’t wait to come back!

One of the best Cantonese restaurants in DC! Everything we tried was delicious — from the tender BBQ pork and savory beef ribs to the fresh dim sum and crispy egg tarts. The pineapple buns were warm and buttery, perfectly paired with tea. Portions are generous, and the flavors taste truly authentic, just like what you’d find in Hong Kong. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere felt cozy yet vibrant. Highly recommend for anyone craving real Cantonese comfort food in DC!

This was my first time visiting this restaurant with my family. The restaurant is very clean, and as soon as we walked in we were warmly and friendly greeted. The food was very delicious and perfect for a family or group dinner. The service was great, although I requested rock sugar and they kept forgetting. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and will definitely recommend this place to my friends and family.

Overall: Tried 1983 for the first time last night and it's actually a decent place for Chinese fine dining in the area. The menu has authentic choices and even tastes authentic. I highly recommend the seafood vermicelli hot pot. It comes out hot and sizzling and tastes great. Atmosphere: very modern, chic and upscale. Great ambiance. Can be nice for a cozy date. Not too loud or crowded when we went (around 8pm on a Monday night). Service: very friendly service from all staff. Most aren't too familiar with English, but there was one young waiter who spoke great English. He was kind and attentive to us during our meal. Everyone else, including the owner, we're super friendly and accommodating as well. The owner offered us free egg tart pastries at the end of our meal and we were so grateful. Food: GREAT food. All the flavors hit. We ordered the spicy dry pepper chicken, choy sum, vermicelli seafood pot, pork belly with crispy skin (appetizer) and the coconut sage with pomelo for dessert. We wanted to order the shrimp siu mai but dim sum wasn't available at that hour. (Hot tip: I highly recommend the siu mai though. I've had it before and the sizes are huge and very good. Full of filling and a piece of real shrimp in every bite.) All the choices we made for our meal were very good. The only slight disappointment was the portions for the pork belly with crispy skin. We ordered it after seeing photos of it on their page and we're disappointed to see them come out half the size as the photos they used to display it. I hope they update it accordingly so it's not misleading. They also offered a prix fixe menu as part of their November special for $48 per person. All parties must order it in order to partake in the special offer. I recommend trying it as they offer some really good options, including the siu mai, seafood vermicelli, and the coconut sago. Definitely worth coming again.
